Data Mapping for Cloud Providers
What are cloud providers?
Cloud providers are vendors that offer services, such as:
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
- Your business purchases access to the cloud provider's infrastructure such as storage, networking, and virtual servers
- Examples: AWS EC2, GC Compute Engine
- Platform as a Services (PaaS)
- Your business purchases access to a computing platform, such as a platform that allows applications to run within the platform
- Examples: GC App Engine, Heroku, Force.com
- Software as a Service (SaaS)
- Your business purchases access to a software application that it accesses via a web browser or other software
- Examples: Salesforce, Shopify, Google Workspace (G Suite) services, like Gmail and Google Docs
How do you map data sharing with cloud providers?
Vendors providing IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS cloud services are processors of any data that your business provides to them or gives them access to.
Infrastructure as a Service
When mapping Data Sharing with an IaaS provider, identify the categories of information your business provides to or allows the IaaS to access.
Platform as a Service
When mapping Data Sharing with an PaaS provider, identify the categories of information your business provides to or allows the PaaS to access.
Software as a Service
SaaS providers will often collect additional data (directly from consumers or otherwise) on your business's behalf in order to provide a service to your business. When mapping Data Sharing with a SaaS provider, you should identify the categories of information your business provides to or gives the SaaS provider access to, as well as any data the SaaS provider collects from or about consumers on your business's behalf.
